STREETDRIFT.NET Opinion Of The Day:
Not that Europeans aren't already used to eye-watering car prices, but the pricing GM set for the ZR1 in the UK might even shock the more well-heeled car enthusiasts.
At a reasonable £57K the ZR1 fun starts in the US ($103,000 - with the exchange rate on Sep 29). A price that makes the Corvette ZR1 one of the most affordable supercars. In fact, it is probably the best "bang for the buck" any manufacturer can currently give you. However, the prospective UK customers aren't that lucky. A bittersweet £109,000 will have to change owners, to make the ZR1 dream come true in (HRH) Queen's home land. With the current exchange rate, that puts a $196,000 price sticker on the Uber-Vette with 638 hp, roughly double the price in the United States.
Surely, the difference in VAT/sales tax might be responsible for some of it, but a price almost twice as much seems somewhat steep. But then again, the ZR1 is an exclusive model and GM will only release a very limited number to the UK (the word is single digits per year for 08/09). And the Brits are known as car nuts. So even with a $200K price sticker on the island, the cars won't sell without problems.
